Where do I go when I really need to hit pay dirt on an under $20 cab? One place I look is Washington’s Columbia Valley. The out-of-control vineyards prices that struck Napa, Sonoma, and now much of the rest of California have not quite hit the region just yet. Furthermore – the weather is much more Bordelais than California which can add more structure and finesse than Napa with less interference.
My other go-to call for Cabernet that drinks at several times it’s price point is Anne Sery-Martindale. Her small lot Trousse-Chemise label has captured the imagination of dozens of sommeliers from The Odeon to Restaurant Daniel.
And furthermore – many of you have been delighted with her Washington state cabs that have delightfully borrowed a page from Professor Denis Dubourdieu’s playbook at the University of Bordeaux’s school of enology.
During our call a couple of weeks ago, Anne again tipped her hand, letting us know of a little side project that deserved a closer look. Anne had done it again.
Drawn from two choice spots in the Columbia Valley where Washington’s high desert land meets the Columbia River – the 2018 Cascade Heights is juicy, inky purple, full-bodied Cabernet. Despite the bright tannins that argue for a successful drinking window of over 10+ years, this big, juicy cab is drinking excellent right now.

The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
90-92 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 91 Pts (Editors’ Choice), Wine Enthusiast – 91 Pts, Decanter
The wines get consistent high praise but 2018 is truly something special. 90-92 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. 91 points and an Editor’s Choice designation from Wine Enthusiast. 91 more from Decanter who provides “There is so much to enjoy in the smaller appellations this year. Drinking Window 2022 – 2031” and another 90 point score from James Suckling. This is a home run value – especially for the price.
94 Points, Tasting Panel
This is a really exciting new release in the collection of single-vineyards from the Wagner Family, and arguably the most interesting one of the bunch. This is the only Pinot Noir in the Caymus collection that has the advantage of being from a natural Pinot Noir haven in the Russian River Valley. Dairyman Vineyard’s proximity to the pacific ocean, with its morning fog and afternoon coastal breezes allows for an even and elongated growing season, with super concentrated and expressive grape clusters that help make this Dijon clone Pinot Noir one that you need.
92 Points, Vinous – 91 Points, Wine Spectator
Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
