The estate, which sits directly adjacent to the vineyards of Soldera, has been causing quite a stir lately, with the 95-point score hardly a fluke. In fact, several publications have finally taken notice in addition to the Wine Advocate with James Suckling and Antonio Galloni of Vinous now calling on the estate. Seems like they’re doing something right.
But when it rains it pours – just as the 2016 Brunello vintage is a classic – the 2018 Rossos are phenomenal. So when I got the Brunello deal done, it wasn’t the only new release I plucked from star winemaker, Giacomo Bartolommei. I also managed to secure 20 cases of the 2018 Rosso di Montalcino, the winery’s ‘Baby Brunello’ release and a rising star in its own right.
James Suckling highlighted it in his great under $25 Tuscan wines giving it a 92-point score and calling it “full bodied” and “beautiful.” He also encouraged Italian wine buyers to scoop up all the 2018 Rossos they can saying, “for consumers, they are essentially younger Brunellos on sale.”
But today’s Rosso is one of the few really worthy of the title ‘baby brunello’ being several notches above most. The 2018 Caprili Rosso di Montalcino is cut from limestone and rocky soil giving it an earthy complexity and sophistication. From there, it spent 12 months in neutral Slovanian oak where it was fermented using native yeasts ala old school Brunello.

92 Points, James Suckling
A tight, refined red with red and sour-cherry aromas and flavors that are buttressed with walnut, bark and chocolate-powder character. Full-bodied and chewy. Tight and beautiful. Drink or hold

91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
Corzano e Paterno is an absolute oasis in the rolling hills of Chianti, a must visit if you go to Tuscany. The wine there is absolutely killer. The Corzanello 2006 is a gem – one from the back of the cellar that I took away many years ago. It’s a gorgeous blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon and even though it has aged gracefully for nearly two decades, it still has plenty of life. I’d drink it now or over the next 3-5 years.
Not Eligible for Futher Discount-From famed winemaker, Robert Foley comes an absolute delight of a bottle of wine. A seamless Bordeaux blend of 80% Cabernet, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that is incredibly smoothly now but should have another decade easy of prime drinking. It is the definition of a Saturday Night bottle of wine. One to cherish for a special occasion.
92 Points, Vinous – 91 Points, Wine Spectator
Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
