I found a tiny under-the-radar producer in the southwestern hills of Montalcino, that up until the 2015 vintage had managed to stay out of the hands of wine critics. But with critics scouring for every bottle of 2015 and 2016 to enjoy review, tiny Caprili caught the attention of the most formidable critics in the world, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. The Advocate gave Caprili’s 2015 single-vineyard Riserva a roaring 96+ point score, a score which ruffled feathers in Tuscany. Who is Caprili and was this a fluke? That question would be answered less than a year later.
In the 2016 vintage, the Wine Advocate understandably fawned over this hidden jewel, showering it with a 95-point review and calling it “smooth and silky” and commenting on the “beautiful energy on hand.” But this wasn’t their $120/bottling, it was their estate Brunello di Montalcino at a ridiculously good price.

95 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino makes a great first impression thanks to the purity and intensity of the fruit. Those two things—purity and intensity—can sometimes be uncomfortable bedfellows, but this expression from Caprili unites them in happy marriage. The bouquet opens to bright red fruit, cola, chopped mint and blue flower. There is a lot of beautiful energy on hand. The wine is smooth and silky, giving it both near and long-term appeal.

Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.

Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
