Camille Giroud is a historic name in Burgundy and for their first 100 years of business, the business model was pretty simple. Curate relationships with the very best growers in the region – buy their wine in bulk or in some cases grapes and then age the wines until they were perfect, often times for decades. The family-run business became experts at cellaring techniques and infamous for their ability to taste the true potential of wines decades before they’d be ready to drink.
They would then sell the wines – already aged – at massive profits to an extremely exclusive clientele. Their auctions are legendary and many bottles can still be found today – floating around in private collections with four figure price tags.
But Ann had a larger vision and wanted even deeper relationships with their growers and increased control over the finished product. She also began to release some of the wines in more traditional channels and in a much more timely manner.
Like at Colgin, she amped up the winemaking team as well. Robert Parker summarized, “they sought a young, talented winemaker to take the negociant by the scruff of the neck and kick-start a renaissance. That is exactly what happened when David Croix was hired as regisseur in 2005. Most of the fruit is contracted, though like Albert Bichot across the road, ….David manages the vineyards and has summarized his policy: one contracted grower per cru in order to articulate a sense of place.”
I’m super excited to be working with these wines once again and have chosen one of my favorites from the portfolio – especially when one considers the bang for the buck. From Mercurey in the north Cote Chalonnaise, comes a stunner of a Pinot.

“The 2021 Malbec Reserva, from Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo, was 60% aged in barrels for 12 months. Purple in color. The nose presents notes of fresh plum and violets, white pepper, strawberry, hints of spice and aromas from the aging process. It’s initially indulgent in the mouth, with good fat, and volume and a velvety texture. The flavors are bold and full-bodied. This 2021 overdelivers at the price.” -Vinous
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!

Feudo Montoni has been one of the best producers in Italy for literally hundreds of years, most notably for their work with Nero D’Avola grape in Sicily. It’s a gorgeous expression at such a good price. The 2020 “Lagnusa” is the perfect pizza or Thanksgiving wine with juicy black fruits, grippy tannins and a wonderful, fresh and herbaceous finish. Vinous Media gave the wine 92 points and raved, calling it “remarkably fresh yet long, leaving the mouth watering while still resonating on hints of blackberry.” You’re going to love this.
Not Eligible for Futher Discount-From famed winemaker, Robert Foley comes an absolute delight of a bottle of wine. A seamless Bordeaux blend of 80% Cabernet, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that is incredibly smoothly now but should have another decade easy of prime drinking. It is the definition of a Saturday Night bottle of wine. One to cherish for a special occasion.
