Josh Jensen learned from the best on his way to building his iconic brand. The American wine pioneer and founder of Calera, spent years in Burgundy learning from some of the best before starting his own winery in the Central Coast of California. His mentors told him that in order to grow great Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, you had to find limestone soil, so Josh spent the next two years going up and down California looking for just that.
About 100 miles south of San Francisco he found a limestone rich parcel near Mt. Harlan that caught his eye after nearly two full years searching. He purchased a small plot and began planting. In his first few years, he made only Zinfandel from other peoples’ vineyards in order to fund his winemaking. Then, when his Burgundian plantings began to bear fruit, that was all she wrote.
Robert Parker famously said “Calera is one of the most compelling Pinot Noir specialists of not only the New World, but of Planet Earth.” Josh has was recognized by Wine Spectator in 2013 as the Cover photo and the featured article. His wines have been turning heads for decades now.
His Chardonnays are made in the style of Burgundy, thanks to Josh’s special DRC training. From top to bottom, his white wines shine as high-toned, expressive Chardonnays ala a Vire Clese. They always receive big press, though the 2020 just came out recently, so it hasn’t been scored yet. We’ve heard that Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and others will chime in. These are great wines to snag while we have them in.

We’re nearing the end of what was a flawlessly crafted, high energy coastal Chardonnay release from one of California’s hottest spots. It’s still every bit as bright and refreshing as you could want and it hits with clean, pristine green apple fruits, pears and citrus notes with a hint of that limestone-influenced minerality. It’s a fantastic wine for all seasons, the perfect pair with mixed seafood, summer tomatoes, corn and freshly caught fish.
It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.
From just west of Sancerre, Vincent’s vines are tended organically in flint-laden, calcareous soil which lends a great brightness to the wine. The wine is crisp and aromatic Sauvignon, and is a superb choice for a “cocktail” wine, as an aperitif or to accompany just about anything from sea.
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
