100% organic in practice since 2000 and certified in 2016, I like the “Go Big or Go Home” style of friend and winemaker, Alessandro Castellani. He uses zero chemical products anywhere on the farm or in the cellar, raises and breeds native Brogna sheep that keep the vines clear of weeds and provide “magical” natural fertilizer and plants a cover crop that is then tilled under to provide nitrogen and carbon to the soil. It’s 20 times the amount of work as conventional farming, it’s amazing it is not 20x the conventional price….
I also like the “go big or go home” style of the 2016 Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore Malavoglia. This “baby Amarone” has a deep, crimson-red color and absolutely blasts from the glass at the first pour. The nose is wild, with earth-tinged dried cherry, fig, dark chocolate and cedar leading to a packed core of juicy fruit flavors. The finish is long and fresh, speaking to the limestone-affected soil Alessandro’s old vines are rooted in.

Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator
92 Points, Wine Spectator – 91 Points, James Suckling
“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
The 50 hectare estate of Maurice Robert is the jewel of this beautiful growing region, located east of Bordeaux. Robert is first and foremost a viticulturist, tending his vines like gardens. The Bordeaux Rouge 2016, a barrel-fermented, vibrant blend Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with juicy cassis fruit and just the right touch of savory spice. It is a perfect choice for roasted poultry, grilled burgers or steaks or any Alpine cheese.
91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
