The vineyards surrounding the medieval fortified village of Jesi are planted to the white variety Verdicchio. They are blessed with a beautiful, maritime climate. The Castelli di Jesi Classico zone is the best area for aromatic and lively white wines, its sandy soil is interlaced with fossilized shellfish, allowing for great minerality to show through in its best wines. The Brunori family have been farming naturally in this area for three generations; their top vineyard, San Nicolò, is widely regarded as the top cru in their zone. The wine has a terrific combination of fruit and vibrancy with beautiful aromatics and a lovely, nutty finish.

Very rarely can we find such aromatic complexity and food friendliness in a $17 bottle of wine.
Hands down, one of the best white wines for apertifs, any kind of seafood or roasted poultry.
The 2016 vintage in Napa was nearly perfect for winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val). With ideal weather all throughout harvest, he crafted the Faustini Money Road Chardonnay off the famous vineyard located in the coveted Oakville AVA. The picturesque vineyard off Oakville Crossroad is platinum rated, known for its ideal combination of soil & climate and the big A list names that routinely source fruit. Kian’s Money Road Chard is still youthful despite having a few years of age, probably as a result of its 18 months of slumber in 1/4 new Oak.
The sandy soil of north Piemonte is home to the appellation Roero and the indigenous variety, Arneis. Stefano Almondo is a master of the rare variety, crafting aromatic and mineral wines that rival any of the best white wines in Italy. The 2019 Vigne Sparse dazzles right out of the bottle; floral and fruity with juicy peaches and apricots yet with a chalky mineral streak as well. This is such a complex white and the kicker is its finish which goes on for a minute of pure joy.

Again, Huet’s 2019 Vouvray Le Mont Sec reflects the unique, south-facing nine-hectare vineyard with its pebbly flint (silex) and green clay soils wonderfully! Pure, fresh and flinty on the deep, intense yet also floral and herbal nose that represents a concentrated and firm white stone fruit aroma with lemon and grapefruit notes as well as fennel, anise and cumin hints. This is a winner from an epic producer with only a few bottles left to go round!
I understand how daunting it can be each year to get Leflaive into your collection. But, even in its infancy, the 2018 vintage promises to bring something special. It already has Wine Spectator calling it, “an ideal vintage at Domaine Leflaive” and after tasting through the wines last week– I’m amazed.
The Mâcon-Verzé is a stunner and an incredible value. Drawn from nine special plots, and utilizing a combination of steel, cement and oak fermentation that leads to a wide array of flavor profiles. Fresh Granny Smith Apple set against a persistent minerality, refreshing with hints of Meyer Lemon.
Of course, it’s got incredible length and precision and at the price today, is as good a bargain as exists at Domaine Leflaive. If you’re starting or expanding your cellar, this is an impeccable place to begin.
