whether it be an appetizer wine with the pigs in the blankets, a main course sturdy BIG RED or even a wine that can play nicely with dessert. This has it all in spades. It’s a juicy number from a great producer, the folks at Bodegas Chavarri.
They’ve been a main player in Rioja since the late 1800’s and make almost two dozen wines from native grapes. Their Tempranillo is the family’s calling card. They make expressive wines with bright red tones, fruity and sage filled aromas and incredibly food-friendly. .The location of the family vineyards under the Sierra de Cantabria mountain range gives the wines the unique and authentically Rioja personality.
Their 2016 Rioja Reserva is a particular showstopper. Everybody who tasted this with me two weeks ago was floored. I even blind tasted one of my buddies that thought it was a Napa Cab! James Suckling called it, “savory and complex”, “refined”, “juicy”, “elegant” and “precise” in his 93-point review which is just about as excited I’ve seen Mr. Suckling in any review he’s written this year.

Savory and complex nose with minty blueberries, cedar, wet leaves, tobacco and chili chocolate. Quite sleek, refined and juicy, medium-bodied palate, showing lots of restraint and elegance. Long and precise. Delicious now, but can hold for another five years, too.

This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
Not Eligible for Futher Discount-From famed winemaker, Robert Foley comes an absolute delight of a bottle of wine. A seamless Bordeaux blend of 80% Cabernet, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that is incredibly smoothly now but should have another decade easy of prime drinking. It is the definition of a Saturday Night bottle of wine. One to cherish for a special occasion.

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
