The saying goes that if you want to find a good Rosé in Provence, all you have to do is walk to the next winery. To some extent, that’s true. Everybody’s favorite, pink wine, took off in Provence in the late 1990s creating one of the fastest growing trends in wine & spirits history.
In fact Rosé got so popular in the region, it now accounts for more than 90% of all the wine made there, a staggering number. And while there’s great Rosé wherever you go in Provence, to find my favorites, the smooth, dry, higher elevation Rosé, you have to go to the hills of Aix-en-Provence.
In the “city of a thousand fountains”, wineries such as Bieler Père et Fils have the advantage of nearly 300 meters in altitude, something much of the region can’t benefit from. At these heights, the cooler, windier nights keep the grapes in perfect balance.
The father-son duo of Charles and Philippe Bieler have been working together making wine for nearly 25 years. Philippe, the elder of the two, worked for 30 years at Chateau Routas, turning the small Provence winery into an international super star. His son Charles grew up watching his dad and then eventually working with him.
Their goal each year is to find the delicate balance between floral, herbal, wild red fruits, stone fruit and acid and to create the perfect harmonious blend. They make the Sabine Rosé each year as a blend of their best fruit sourced from within the sub-region. They’ve been working with the same growers now since their inception, a key ingredient into the continued excellence the father son pair has enjoyed.

90 Points, Vinous Media
Fresh red fruits, a hint of peach and a building floral quality on the nose. Silky and seamless in texture, offering juicy strawberry, nectarine and orange flavors that are sharpened by a spicy flourish. Finishes long and supple, with repeating spiciness and a touch of anise.

The Bernard Reverdy Sancerre Rose 2022 is gorgeous. A beautiful pale pink to the brim, this baby is fresh and super aromatic with a complex nose of citrus, wild strawberries and white flowers. With air, higher tones emerge, with a great mingling of ripe fruit, and stony minerality. Medium-bodied, fresh and focused on the palate, with concise limestone-drive acidity, this is an elegant, lively, and energetic Sancerre Rose that mirrors the warm vintage but also the old vines rooting deep in stony soils. This is so much better than your run-of-the mill Rose – it’s an ageworthy, food-friendly Rose
90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
At 350 feet above sea level, growing seasons are often extended with warm days and cool, breezy nights. The diurnal changes of temperature help create healthy vines and grapes that are packed full of complexity, concentration and energy. Ain’t a whole of Provence wineries that can compare. We’ve offered Val de Caire’s spectacular Provence Rouge before, but their bread and butter wine, the Coteaux d’Aix en-Provence Rose has finally been imported into the U.S. for the first time. People are gonna go nuts for this wine.
The wine is so dang good, nearly every single one of my staff tried to take the sample bottle home when it was brought into the restaurant. It’s just so juicy, lively and pure. Even without the score, this is a total layup. This is a gorgeous French Rosé at an absurd price. One of the absolute best quality-to-price ratio offers of the year, every single year… no questions asked.
