Belle Glos Las Alturas Vineyard Pinot Noir 2024

Of all the Belle Glos Single-Vineyard Pinots, I always think that this one has the most personality. Maybe it’s the high elevation Santa Lucia Highlands with the big temperature swings from night to day. You can thank the unique mix of intense wind, cold ocean fog, and poor soil that forces the grapes to develop deep, concentrated flavors. The 2024 vintage is as generous can be, and this beauty is the latest release, having come out just last week. The palate is rich and powerful, and fresh as can be with red and black fruits, silky tannins and a ton of approachability.

Deep and dark aromas of black cherry, sandalwood and incense make for a heady nose on this bottling. The palate is big and bold, loaded with ripe black cherry and boysenberry flavors, as peppery, incense-like spices add complexity and the texture stays lusciously creamy.

Owner/winemaker, Joe Wagner chose the name Belle Glos to honor his grandmother, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner. Lorna was a co-founder of Caymus Vineyards along with her son Chuck and was an inspirational figure to Joe and an avid lover of Pinot Noir.

Though she wasn’t around to see her grandson’s Pinot Noir project, there’s little doubt she would’ve loved the timeless terroir-driven classics that Joe and team cook up each vintage. But in the 2021 vintage, recovering from a nasty year with wildfires, Joe’s team reached heights, I’m not sure he would’ve ever dreamed up. The 2023 vintage in Napa and throughout California was a dream for juicy Pinot Noir, especially at Las Alturas Vineyard at 1200 feet altitude in the Santa Lucia Highlands.
