Balestri Valda Soave 2018 needs to be the star of your next summer feast. The perfect complement to any meal of intensely flavored tomatoes, sweet corn and the fluke, scallops and oysters of the Jersey shore, my bet is that if you are drinking Pinot Grigio you need to give Balestri Valda a try. Guido, Laura and Luca Rizzotto organically farm old vines of Garganega and Trebbiano in the rolling hills of Soave, creating high-toned, delicious white wines.
Their Soave Classico 2018 is wonderfully aromatic, redolent of white nuts and jasmine. It’s concentrated and juicy, with a long, electric finish. This is a house white, perfect by itself, or paired with just about anything. The cost is crazy. Stock up!

There is no Pinot Grigio in the world that is farmed organically, sourced from old vines on mineral soil and made in tiny quantities and only costs $14.40 a bottle on cases. I don’t understand the business plan yet, but I’ll take it. Crazy good, crazy cheap, stock up!

“The 2018 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard marks the beginning of winemaker Joe Nielsen’s tenure at the winery. Pouring a medium yellow with a light golden hue, it’s most reserved of the flight aromatically at the moment, with yellow chamomile flowers, ripe peach, beeswax, and white flowers. Full-bodied, it retains excellent tension and focus on the palate, with apricot, orange zest, and a savory finish with a bit of spice. I suspect this will come around and open with time. Every year, Pierre Sparr’s Alsacian Riesling is one of the top scoring wines in the under $20 category. That’s why, despite having the Torres family name on the bottle and the consistent huge press (including the Gold Medal & Best in Show at the 2023 Mundus Vini International Wine Awards in Germany), these wines can still be scooped up for under $20/bottle. It’s like the Sancerre pricing of yesteryear.
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
