When James Suckling and his team evaluated nearly one thousand Pinot Noirs from the 2017 vintage in the States, there was no way of knowing how things would shake out. Russian River, Sonoma Coast, Anderson Valley? Nope. Low and behold, three out of the top four highest rated wines of the entire vintage belonged to none other than Maggie Harrison.
But, if you have been following her since her days at Sine Qua Non and have tasted her wines, you’re not at all surprised. Maggie has built a tiny empire in Oregon. Antica Terra is distributed in 22 countries around the world, supplying some of the best restaurants in the world (Coppo in L.A. Eleven Madison Park, and 67 Pall Mall in London to name a few). They are one of a very select few wineries that don’t have a wine club, just a lengthy wait to join their allocation list– two emails annually, first come first serve– which on average sells out within 24 hours of hitting send.

97 Points, James Suckling
This starts out with a more savory, earthy and spicy expression and has a gently meaty edge to the nose with a vibrant, exotic feel. Violets and wild herbs abound with forest wood and sous bois – very complex already. The palate has a very tautly composed feel with acidity really adding spark to dense, powerful tannins. Red and dark cherries abound and there’s a floral and mineral thread of flavor. Salty too, like samphire and nasturtium. Striking wine. Best from 2023.

Avignonesi’s wines took Nicholas Wines by storm last year with their ‘Grifi’ SuperTuscan, a highly rated, highly delicious bottle that put the winery firmly on my radar. It’s a great bottle of wine, but at this price – it completely overdelivers which is exactly what you’re looking for.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
