Alpha Estate is a gorgeous sprawling estate in Amyndeon, Greece that represents a new generation of Greek wines that extend past just the coastal AVAs. The winemaker, Angelos Iatridis trained in Bordeaux for years as well as Italy before returning to Greece and is considered the godfather of many well-known Greek wines.
The estate was recognized by Wine & Spirits as one of the Top 100 Wineries in the world in 2021 and it’s pretty easy to see why when they make wines like this. The Alpha Estate Sauvignon Blanc is a beauty – a Top 100 recipient but also a wine that was met with a trio of 90+ reviews and heaps of praise. This is a sophisticated Sauvignon Blanc that is going to delight all those who snag a few bottles.

92 Points, James Suckling
A vibrant and tropical white with notes of green apples, passion fruit, lime curd and kaffir leaves on the nose. Touch of juniper berry, too. it’s medium-bodied, crisp and textured, with subtle flinty hints at the end. Vegan.
90 Points, Wine Spectator (#85,Top 100 Wines of 2023)
A bright, light- to medium-bodied white, with hints of flint and chive blossoms accenting ripe green pear and melon fruit. Well-knit, with a minerally finish.
90 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate
The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc is unoaked and dry and comes in at 13.1% alcohol. Like the other 2022s in this report, this has a crisp and wonderfully fresh feel. It is tightly wound and not quite as vegetal as some but always leaning to freshness. There is plenty of zing and zest on the finish and it makes this work. For all that freshness and elegance, it has reasonably good concentration and feels substantial in its youth (in bottle only about 60 days when tasted). This is a beauty in its style and on its own terms. It’s another success. It will drink great this summer, perhaps improve throughout the year and then hold on for several more. I do like to drink them on the younger side for safety, but I won’t be surprised if this one does a little better than anticipated.
It’s no wonder this is a hot little ticket amongst some of NYC’s best restaurants; this is a killer wine at a great price. The 2022 Petit Chablis has an attractive nose of citrus rind, white flowers, and wet stone. In the palate, the wine is racy and mineral with just a touch of salinity. The hallmark of the great 2022s will be tension and length and Sébastien’s little wine has both in spades. The acidic/mineral cut will make this fantastic at the table and a great candidate for short term aging.
95 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
The former assistant winemaker and apprentice for Helen Turley at Marcassin, Matt Courtney left to start something special at Arista in 2013 and is well on his way. The winery has expanded, their waitlist for bottle allocations now stands at 18-months and every critic in America raves about these wines. His newly released 2019 Arista Russian River Valley Chard is a gem, one that earned 95 pts from Parker’s Wine Advocate who called it, “wonderfully inviting to drink and impressive quality.”
A large glass is necessary to capture the brilliant aromatics of Talmard’s Macon Uchizy. Aromas of ripe Meyer lemon, peach, honey and mint just blast from the glass upon pouring. The wine takes on weight with aeration, developing flavors of crisp green apple, juicy peach and lemon custard. The finish is long and fresh, so good with food. Roast some salmon, make sweet corn risotto, use it as an aperitif, it’s a great choice for a house white to be enjoyed all year round.
What would a Chardonnay collection be without something special from the master of Chardonnay, Steve Kistler? I was just allotted a few cases of the outrageously good Les Noisetiers from California’s exceptional 2021 vintage. It comes bristling with energy, nuance, juicy fruit and a mouthwatering mineral backbone. As always with these wines, it is expertly made with lemon, honeysuckle and stone fruit aromatics leading to a full bodied, juicy core, loaded with flavors of peach, apricots, pineapple and pear.
