Every year, surrounded by the gorgeous mountainous backdrop of Mendoza, Argentina, Achaval Ferrer’s owners, Santiago and Roberto look to create something special. They view their work blending their Quimera as a balance between winemaking and architecture, designing a blend that highlights the unique Mendoza terroir with tremendous precision.
Each year the blend is very different based on what performed the best in the vineyard. In 2018, the two made a firecracker of a Big Red – an explosive Malbec/Cabernet Sauv heavy blend with Merlot and Cab Franc intertwined to add layers of depth, and intricacy.
The winery is known for their work with Bordeaux Blends. And their single-vineyard “Finca” bottlings are high-flying Reds known to be some of the finest expressions in all of Argentina. The problem is, they are all $125/bottle. Well worth it for true New World lovers, but still a commitment.
But their Quimera Red blend gives readers the best of both worlds – an exceptional premium Saturday night wine at a total Tuesday night price. I had this wine last week and it harkens back to those big, brash massive reds the Robert Parker was so fond if that always carried 98+ Wine Advocate scores with them.
So if you were a fan of the wines of Abreu, Bond, Colgin, Scarecrow, Screaming Eagle, etc… during their heyday, then this is a must buy and a steal. If you more into more delicate and subtle reds, then I might take a pass on this one.

Blackberries with black truffles and violets on the nose. Full-bodied and very tight with firm, silky tannins that give this wine form and energy. Plenty of compressed and focused fruit at the end. Lots of blue fruit. Drink after 2024.

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator

“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
