A perfect Tuesday night wine that delivers value far above its price tag. It’s both juicy and fine loaded with aromas and flavors of red flowers, berries and anise. This is one of those incredibly food friendly wines coming out of the Rhone that seems like striking gold to stumble upon. An old vine Grenache-Syrah blend from vineyards planted at some of the highest points in the Rhône, this is a gift that gives every vintage and even if I have to wait a few years to get my hands on the next vintage, I’m more than happy to do it for a winner like this.
Winemaker Marjorie Gallet’s Effet Papillon Rouge is a terrific blend of Grenache, Syrah and Carignane, harvested from the iron rich soil just outside of Rivesaltes at the base of Pyrenees. This one is a vibrant wine, with aromas of wild black raspberries and sweet spices. The mid palate is rich and velvety, with a core of sweet black fruit that finishes fresh, long and silky. At the price, it’s a no-brainer case buy.

“The 2019 Syrah Estate Grown is superb. Bright, rich and juicy, the 2019 captures all the qualities that make Ballard Canyon wines so compelling. Blue/purplish fruit, scorched earth, licorice, chocolate and cured meats all saturate the palate. Some of the other Syrahs are more potent, but the Estate often has the best balance. These are the most impressive wines I have tasted from Peter Stolpman. Over the years, Stolpman and his family have invested incessantly in their Ballard Canyon ranch, so their success is very much earned and deserved. Within the typical range of wines, my favorite bottling remains the Estate, which I feel best encapsulates both the personality of this site and Ballard Canyon more broadly.” -Antonio Galloni
