“The 2020 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is a heady, almost exotic wine. Harvest took place on October 17, very late for the year. Hard candy, kirsch, menthol, dried rose petal, mint and blood orange infuse the 2020 with striking depth. The tannins, often incisive here, are remarkably polished. A wine of beautiful nuance and persistence, the 2020 Gavarini is not the most obvious wine in this range, but it could very well be the classiest. Don’t miss it!”

Massolino is a treasure. They’re one of the few wineries that can say they have over 25 wines! on Wine Spectator’s annual ‘Top 100 Wines of the Year’ list, and they’re not alone in their praise. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate in their recent tasting of Massolino’s 2016s wrote, “I am struck by the harmony and perfection of the overall portfolio.” Today’s wine is massive and still young. It’s also from one of the most famous vineyards in all of Italy in one of Italy’s greatest vintages. This is one you need for your cellar.
2016 happens to be one of the highest rated ever (98pts, Wine Spectator) so it was no surprise that this year’s made the cut. The 2016 Riserva which was just released, is an intense version steeped in complex layers of flavor. It’s compact and well built with a touch of leather that compliments dark cherries, fresh licorice and a hint of cocoa all framed on a mineral backbone.

“Pio Cesare does a great job with its classic 2019 Barolo (in production since 1881). The bottom of the front label reads “Barolo Pio” in memory of the legendary Pio Boffa. He was a wine entrepreneur who gained the immediate respect and love of all those who knew him. This is a large production with fruit sourced from across seven vineyards in five villages. Despite those ambitious numbers, the wine remains strictly focused on bright Nebbiolo fruit with red cassis and aniseed. The finish is smooth with tannins that elegantly dissolve over the palate.”
