94 Points, James Suckling
Grifi is a particular highlight in Avignonesi’s impressive portfolio. It’s a large reason, Antonio Galloni called the winery “one of the most respected names in Tuscany”. The ½ Cabernet, ½ Sangiovese blend is a big boy, especially in the hot and dry 2017 vintage, but it also is very tightly structured with silky Sangiovese tannins and a great acidic backbone from the Cabernet that give it lift and elegance as well as ageability. The Grifi Toscana 2017 perfectly exhibits the true terroir of Tuscany – well deserving of the 94-points James Suckling reigned down on it, as well as his praise, “[The Grifi] really brings you through the glass”.
97 Points, James Suckling – 94 Points, Robert Parker – 94 Points, Vinous
A very special Italian Collectors item. 2015 was an enormous gift for any winery with a Tuscan address. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated the vintage a shocking 97 points. Ian D’Agata – arguably the foremost expert on Italian wine has gushed, calling the 2015s “the best in recent memory.” But maybe Mr. James Suckling said it most succinctly, exclaiming “The 2015 vintage is a historical year for Brunello di Montalcino that nobody should miss.”
2019 will be the next classic in a line of great Montalcino vintages, with the power and fruit of 2007 or 15 with the structure and aromatic complexity of 2010 or 16. Cerbaia’s Rosso is expressive and elegant with the lifted aromatic profile only possible when sourced from high elevation vineyards rooted in mineral soil. In the mouth, it shows juicy, bright red berries with savory elements of sage, sweet tobacco and anise. An almost perfect vintage makes this Rosso hard to resist right away but it has the bones to mature gracefully in a proper cellar for 5-7 years.
Winemaker, Joschi Goldschimdt, has produced a killer Chianti in ’19, filled with aromas and flavors of sweet berries, rose petals, cedar, and tobacco, wrapped tightly with a firm structure and fine finish. Amazing tension guarantees this to be a no-brainer at any dinner table, delicious with just about anything.
96 Pts, Vinous – 94 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate
In a very hot 2017 vintage in Tuscany, it seems like no winery did better than Isole e Olena’s small but immaculately run operation. Paolo De Marchi is meticulous about wine, approaching it from a scientific point-of-view and trying to do as much research and experimentation as possible. The 2017 Private Selection is an enormous, full-bodied beauty that is as big and expressive as anything you’re going to find in any region. It’s still in its infancy in terms of where it’s heading, but it’s a wine you’re going to want to have a few bottles to visit down the road. I was only able to get 60 bottles and that’s the only bite of the apple. Everybody who gets this one will be very happy.

If you’re looking for the best version of this centuries old grape, look to “The Soul of Chianti” and Elisabetta Fagiuoli. This amazing woman has been in charge of the town’s most notable winery, Montenidoli since the 1960’s (celebrating her 50th vintage in 2021!) and though she’s viewed as an icon, she says winemaking is no different for her than making soup– a family tradition that has been passed from down generation to generation and just feels like a part of her. 97 Points from Decanter loved the wine and noted how it has “staying power and an unmistakable tang”,
Situated right next door to the vineyard of the original Super Tuscan Tignanello Vineyard (costs a cool $125 per bottle these days), Poggio al Sole is the hidden gem of Tuscany. If you want to hit a home run with your next pizza night, I mean, really go all the way, you have to serve the latest release of Poggio al Sole’s fabulous Super-Tuscan, Trittico. The newly released 2019 vintage is in so far this wine is showing beautifully. It definitely bodes well for what is to come as it’s already pretty expressive and energetic. This is a great Sangiovese and Cabernet blend for the summer, with anything off the grill or with pizza. Don’t miss it.
