In the 2018 vintage in Napa, a vintage that Forbes’ Tom Hyland called “a truly outstanding vintage”, Groth’s Oakville Cabernet is absolutely gorgeous. It’s remarkably fresh, with great acidity and tannic structure and plenty of ageability. Antonio Galloni didn’t stop at just calling the wine “fabulous” , going as far to say that the wine “shows the important strides that have been made [at Groth] in recent years.”
Their 2022 Chablis is drop-dead gorgeous. There’s a reason that Jean-Georges’ Fulton, Daniel Boulud’s Bar Boulud, and the Oceans right near Gramercy Park all pour this wine by-the-glass. It absolutely delights those who drink it. There’s so much to love, with its incredible vibrancy that leads to a rich core with flinty tautness and sapid minerality. On the nose, you get stone fruits with floral notes and with lemon pudding flavors that unite with a persistent oyster-shell minerality and back-palate tang that epitomize what Marcel Fèvre recognized in these hillsides a century ago.

The 2021 Derthona Timorasso is absolutely gorgeous. As Wine Enthusiast writes, “Timorasso is one of the most distinctive white grapes in the Italian canon, and Vietti has struck gold.” The wine is perfectly in balance, harmonious stone fruits, honey, beeswax and straw notes mingle perfectly with stony minerality and some delicious salty flavors.

Sitting just above the fog line, Fog Break Vineyard is perfectly protected from the harsh valley breezes. The vineyard retains the heart from the early morning sun throughout the day. The additional warmth, paired with the vineyard’s shallow iron-rich soils, come together to create a distinctive flavor profile that is concentrated, complex, and classically structured.
The cuvee is a rather seamless blend with a melody of flavors. There’s cherries, cranberries, and raspberries with some more subtle notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. I think a lot of people are going to like it. It’s very well-balanced and in sync, with juicy, ripe notes, but nothing over the top. It’s still got silky smooth tannins and plenty of grace.
Our all-time favorite Chardonnay is back for its 30th anniversary bottling in the excellent 2022 vintage. The Wagner Family’s Santa Lucia Highlands Reserve slam dunk. This is one that Nicholas Wines readers can’t get enough of – it always delivers. It leads with an inviting nose with fresh citrus and lemon notes. It’s always juicy, bright and well-balanced – it’s classic Caymus, rich and hedonistic with a wonderful creaminess. This is quintessential California Chardonnay.
92 Points (Best Buy), Wine Enthusiast
It’s dark fruited, with black pepper nuanced throughout, with a lot of precision and some grippy tannins that start to open up with some time in the glass. It doesn’t hit you overhead with new American oak, instead opting for a more mellow, more integrated French Oak. At under $15/bottle, it’s no wonder that Wine Enthusiast went nuts for the wine giving it a 92-point score and a coveted ‘Best Buy’ designation. It’s as classy as any California Cabernet at this price, without a doubt.

The 2022 Hampton Water Rose from the south of France is such an electric wine, people are really going to love it. It’s a lively Rose with tons of personality, with some great minerality, crispness, and bright red fruits. There’s so much energy and tension here as well as a little bit of spice that comes in the end. Everything you’re looking for in a serious Rose.
